Team Spirit

Noémie on the team spirit at RSM Richter
The summer program at RSM Richter was a truly rewarding experience. By taking part in a large number of diverse activities, we got to know an outstanding, energetic and stimulating team. The format of the program provided us with new insight into accounting and into how an accounting firm really works. In fact, we were given the opportunity to train outside the firm, namely in the accounting department of one of the firm’s clients. This showed us the other side of auditing and helped us understand what has to be done before the auditor’s work begins. We also got to spend two or three weeks in a non-audit department, including marketing, administration, finance, taxation or consulting.

After we got back from Québec City, the training sessions were made more enjoyable by the fact that everyone was less tense. At the end of the training period, I completed an external training and went to a client site to complete an audit. Both experiences were very enriching because I was dealing directly with clients. I did not feel like I was “just” a summer student during that time. I was speaking to the client as a professional, and was being treated as such. Also, I received a lot of support from the audit team, and I felt at ease asking questions or clarifications. I received a lot of feedback, which helped me make sure I was on the right track at all times.

Throughout the summer, I believe RSM Richter did a great job making sure that we worked as hard as we had fun. There were many fun activities organized for us, such as Dragon Boating, which I really enjoyed. Also, we were continuously trained during the summer on Fridays, not only on technical skills, but on soft skills as well. Those training sessions helped me develop new abilities to effectively deal with clients. The fact that we had the opportunity to raise funds for Charity was also very helpful because it was the first time I was participating in this type of endeavor and I felt really proud of myself. Overall, being part of the summer student experience was simply amazing.

Véronique on the team spirit at RSM Richter
When I began my summer training at RSM Richter, I didn’t know what to expect, as I’d been required to choose a firm that I knew little about. At the time, I based my decision on the people that I had met and on the general impression they gave me. I was quickly made at ease after taking part in RSM Richter’s recruitment activities. I felt that I belonged. On the very first day, we were given a first-class welcome. The trip to Québec, scheduled for the initial week, was the perfect ice-breaker for all summer students. Other activities were organized throughout the summer for us and for the firm’s employees. In addition to being a lot of fun, they gave us an opportunity to really get to know the people with whom we were working.

I was fortunate enough to land two assignments and a stint in a non-audit department. The assignments taught me a lot of relevant things and enabled me to apply the theory that I had learned at university. When I was sent to a client’s offices for the first time, I was somewhat taken aback, but the other members of my team managed to make me feel comfortable in this new environment. They were patient with me and explained everything very clearly. As a result, I truly enjoyed my audit experience. My non-audit training was done in the taxation department and opened my eyes to a different aspect of accounting, allowing me to extend my knowledge of a unique and critical field.

In conclusion, the atmosphere in this firm is quite pleasant. Summer students are all in the same room, creating a true bond between us. This makes it easier to help one another whenever a problem occurs. In addition, when we have to go elsewhere in the firm, we discover the same friendly atmosphere. In other words, people invite us into their offices, whether to answer questions or simply to talk shop. In closing, I really enjoyed my time as a student at RSM Richter and I feel that I made a wise choice!
