Jia on Internal Training in Tax During my summer internship at RSM Richter, I was given the opportunity to complete a 3 week internal training in the tax department. I found this experience extremely relevant since I have always taken an interest in corporate taxation. I was given the opportunity to apply my knowledge as a summer student towards a real life situation.which I really appreciated. |

I had the opportunity to work with a senior manager in the Tax department. Throughout my internal stage I was lucky enough to be able to share an office with er. This experience enabled me to continuously receive feedback on my work; she was very helpful and supportive. I not only developed a set of new skills, but I also learned how to use different types of software such as “Write up” and “Tax Prep”. The knowledge that I have gained by using these program will definitely be useful throughout my career.
During my 3 weeks in the tax department, I had the opportunity to work on various Estate files and learned how to classify customers’ investments by analyzing their bank statements. I was also responsible for revising sections of individual tax returns and contacting a range of professionals on behalf of our clients.
I was amazed by the level of responsibility I was given and the professionalism of the people I was working with. Their expertise was helpful in understanding the many concepts of Tax and guiding me throughout my internal stage. RSM Richter’s employees were very friendly and helpful. Having an open door policy and a welcoming atmosphere made it very enjoyable to accomplish the tasks I was given.

Khouloud on Internal Training in Marketing We received in April the choices that were available to us with regards to our internship. To my surprise, a wide range of opportunities were offered to us even though we had very little experience, if any at all, in the various fields that were being proposed to us. I chose Marketing given the fact that I had already taken a Marketing class in university. Despite the fact that I was eager to learn more about this line of work, I feared that I might not be equal to the task. After a two-week training period, I went to the 18th floor to begin my three-week internship in the Marketing Department. |
 |
Upon my arrival, the entire team was ready to great me. The narketing director, took the time to introduce me to each team member and explain to me how my three-week internship was going to unfold. The team made me feel comfortable from the outset. The atmosphere in the office was very pleasant and easy-going. There was simply no reason for being nervous!
I also worked in close collaboration with the internal communications team, who, throughout my internship, took the necessary time to answer all my questions. They gave me the opportunity to complete several interesting projects. One of the various projects I got the chance to participate in was the development of the publicity material to be used in universities with the person in charge of graphic design. On many occasions, she sought my opinion and gave much consideration to my ideas. I also wrote several articles that were posted on the intranet. Furthermore, I participated in the organisation of several events, such as Community Day, and the Risk Management Event, a client-facing activity.
Despite my lack of experience in Marketing, I always felt like I was part of the team and that my ideas were taken seriously. Not only did my internship give me the opportunity to discover a different side of the firm, it also helped me improve my communication skills. With the collaboration of the entire marketing department, I was able to develop my creativity.
This internship allowed me to become better acquainted with colleagues that I wouldn’t have had the chance to meet otherwise, which is why, at the end of my internship, I felt that this experience would be beneficial to me as much on a personal level as on a professional level.

Jonathan on Internal Training in Consulting As soon as we received the list of the various departments in which we had the possibility to complete our internships, I made up my mind: the consulting and financial reorganization department. On the first day of our internship as RSM Richter, I was pleased to learn that my first choice was granted to me. And so a few weeks later, I began my internship in consulting on the 22nd floor. |

I had barely settled in when a partner came into my office and gave me a large envelope containing several documents. He wanted me to take a look at the file because a supervisor was coming to see me in 20 minutes! So I quickly began reading the file in order to be prepared for my meeting with the supervisor. The mandate consisted in a countervaluation, where I had to assess the work completed by another accounting firm to determine whether the amount of the litigation was realistic, after which assessment I was to establish, on my own, the amount that I felt was the most adequate.
During the two-week period I spent working on this file, the supervisor gave me free rein to be creative in analysing the situation from all angles so as to arrive at an accurate interpretation of the problem and find the best solution possible, which helped me build up my self-confidence. He guided me, provided me with avenues to explore and, more importantly, took into consideration my ideas, even if they weren’t always good!
During the third and last week of my internship, I had the opportunity to participate in a completely different mandate. The task at hand was to analyse the gross profit that a retail company was making on 50 different items it had in stock, in order to ensure that the company complied with the bank’s requirements. I gained a lot of experience during the course of this mandate. I was required to communicate with the client, who was located in western Canada, and therefore had to be very precise when asking questions to ensure that we were all on the same wavelength and thus facilitate the progression of the mandate.
In conclusion, my internship at RSM Richter Inc. was very beneficial to me, because it gave me the opportunity to acquire knowledge on topics that aren’t necessarily covered in school. Furthermore, I discovered a unique, fast-paced department where mandates cannot be foreseen and the capability to adapt is an important asset.
